This page is very wide without it (there is no right column either)

This seems to be default behavior for plone author pages, example  http://plone.org/author/admin

True. I think with the current template though it's extremely wide across the page without it. We should change the template at some point, I just thought this would be an easy way to decreased the width so the listings looked similar to other pages (eg. /latest videos.
